Performance of Tourism Sector during May 2010

Ministry of Tourism compiles monthly estimates of Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) and Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) during the month of May 2010 on the basis of data received from major airports.
FTAs -3.45 lakh (May 2010), 2.99 lakh (May 2009) and 3.04 lakh (May 2008)
There has been a growth of 15.5% in May 2010 over May 2009 as compared to a negative growth of 1.9% registered in May 2009 over May 2008. Growth rate during May 2010 (15.5%) is much higher than during April 2010 (1.7%).
FTAs during the period January-May 2010 were 22.63 lakh with a growth rate of 11.3 %, as compared to the 20.33 lakh and a negative growth rate of 10.4% during same period in 2009 over the corresponding period of 2008.
Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) from Tourism in Indian Rupee terms and US $ terms
FEE – Rs. 4358 crore (May 2010), Rs. 3249 crore (May 2009) and Rs. 2988 crore (May 2008).

The growth rate in rupee terms in May 2010 over May 2009 was 34.1% as compared to growth rate of 8.7 % in May 2009 over the May 2008.
FEE during the period January-May 2010 were 26622 crore with a growth rate of 27.4%, as compared to Rs. 20892 crore with a negative growth of 6.8% during the same period in 2009 over the 2008.
FEE in US$ terms during the month of May 2010 were US$ 951 million as compared of US$ 669 million in May 2009 and US$ 711million in May 2008.
The growth rate in US$ terms in May 2010 over May 2009 was 42.2% as compared to the negative growth of 5.9 % in May 2009 over May 2008.
FEE during the period January-May 2010 were US$ 5822 million with a growth rate of 38.3% as compared to US$ 4211 million with a negative growth of 24.7% during the same period in 2009 over the 2008.
